About Roly
Roland (Roly) Haughton was born in Manchester in 1932. He started his football career with Manchester United Juniors as a contemporary of Bobby Charlton, who once almost knocked him out with a well connected header!
He later played for amateur Manchester side Kingsley Rovers and started his long career of voluntary work with young people when he ran a Boys Brigade group.
Roly moved to the Isle of Man in 1969 with his family, immediately falling in love with the Island and checking out the local football scene. He and Terry Vincent set up football practice and games for boys under 14, initially training at Peel Clothworkers School. What started as friendly games between teams of up to 24 players, soon became organised into A and B leagues. Good relationships were forged with trainers and managers in other parts of the Island, including George Joughin at Pulrose. Sponsorship from Paradise and Gell, and later Empire Garage, enabled them to purchase proper team strips. To avoid the frustration of boys forgetting or losing their kits, they would be brought home each week and Roly’s lounge was constantly covered in drying shirts, shorts and socks.
They soon began to receive requests for games from UK based teams and put together an under 14 Island team, initially asking each Island team to put forward their 2 best players. An early victory was against Pudsey who, until then, had been unbeaten. The Steam Packet provided cheap travel which helped with the regular tours round the North of England.
Roly remained involved in Junior football until well after his retirement from employment, seeing the provision for young people in Peel expand to boys, teams for under 10s, under 12s, under 14s, under 16s and the introduction of girls teams.
Once he finished active involvement in football, he was given life membership of Peel AFC in recognition of his huge contribution to football in Peel.
Roly’s calm, friendly personality and considerable patience has had a hugely positive impact on all he coached, a number of whom have gone on to become football coaches themselves. Roly’s weekly training was the highlight of the week for so many kids growing up in and around Peel, and a great number of players went on to be successful for Peel AFC and other local clubs after being coached by Roly.
