Inspired by Kelvin for the Community
Kelvin was the chairman of The Tommy Clucas Memorial Fund since the charity was setup in 2005. Kelvin was the driving force behind much of the fundraising of the charity, including the annual Peelstock music festival. The original goal of the charity was to build a community sports hall in memory of Tom, who lost his life in the 2004 Manx Grand Prix.
Kelvin also represented the charity in the project management of the sports hall construction, working closely with contractors JCK Limited.
The Tommy Clucas Community Sports Hall opened in Peel on 1 September 2013 - 9 years to the day since Tom’s accident. The community use of the sports hall has far exceeded all expectations and it is a massive part of sport and recreation in the West.
The Kelvin Dawson Community Hub, which adds to the existing community facilities of the sports hall, is based on ideas which Kelvin had at the time the sports hall was built.
The Hub offers three community rooms (two of which can be opened out into a single, larger room by folding partition) for multi-use by the community and can be accessed for all via a platform lift.
The rooms include an 85”BENQ interactive screen for learning and presentation use, which can be mirrored onto a 75” TV in the adjoining room.
Ceiling speakers can project sound from the screens, a laptop or from a microphone. Looking out one side over Peel Golf Course and the other over Peel Football Club’s pitch, the Hub is available for use with or without a licensed bar.
About The Kelvin Dawson Community Hub
The first of the rooms will be named after Kelvin, looking out over the golf course, and the second after Tom, looking over the sports hall.
The third room, looking out over the football pitch, will be named after Roly Haughton. Roly, who recently turned 90 years old, was instrumental in the setup and development of Peel AFC juniors.
Roly’s calm, friendly personality and considerable patience has had a hugely positive impact on all he coached, a number of whom have gone on to become football coaches themselves.
Kelvin often talked about ‘the Big Picture’, much of which referred to what he saw as the opportunities for Peel to have new or improved community facilities.
We aim for the new facility to act as a catalyst for new activities and events to take place in Peel, as well as to provide a base for further community collaboration to develop more community facilities for the West.
Ideas for use include children’s parties, school holidays activities, wellbeing focussed presentations and activities, sports coach development courses, a viewing area for parents whose children are taking part in activities in the sports hall, fundraising events, serving refreshments after sports hall activities and as a clubroom that can be used by Peel AFC and other sports clubs and groups in Peel and the West. It is expected that local schools will use the facility.
The Hub is aimed to effectively be a blank canvas for the community to use as far as their ideas stretch.
